Project Background
A medium-sized juice processing enterprise in Southeast Asia, specializing in the production and export of tropical fruit concentrates. With the continuous growth of local demand for juice beverages, the company planned to expand its lemon concentrate production capacity. However, during the trial production phase, the traditional plate-and-frame filtration equipment exhibited issues such as low filtration efficiency, lengthy cleaning and maintenance downtime, and unstable product clarity, which severely hindered production efficiency and product quality.
Challenges
The enterprise encountered the following core problems in the lemon concentrate production process:
-
Unstable Filtration Accuracy
The original equipment failed to consistently intercept pulp fibers, pectin, and other suspended solids in the juice, resulting in significant fluctuations in concentrate turbidity. This adversely affected the product’s sensory quality and market acceptance. -
Frequent Maintenance Shutdowns
Replacing and cleaning the filter media in the plate-and-frame system demanded substantial labor and time. Each maintenance operation forced extended production line shutdowns, severely reducing capacity utilization. -
Insufficient Corrosion Resistance
Lemon juice is highly acidic. The carbon steel components of the original equipment experienced corrosion during use, which not only shortened the equipment’s service life but also posed a risk of metal ion leaching that could compromise product flavor.
Solution
After technical evaluation and comparison of multiple alternatives, the enterprise ultimately selected stainless steel bag filters as the core filtration equipment. The supplier customised a filtration solution based on the customer’s actual production conditions:
-
Corrosion-Resistant Main Body: Constructed from food-grade 304 stainless steel with a sandblasted surface finish, offering both corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. This is particularly suitable for the acidic lemon juice environment, while preventing metal contamination of the juice flavor.
-
High-Efficiency Filter Elements: The filter uses the standard No. 2 filter bag specification (180×810mm), equipped with PP filter bags at 50-micron precision. This efficiently intercepts fruit pulp and pectin-like impurities while preserving the natural flavor and nutritional components of the juice.
-
User-Friendly Structural Design:
-
Side-in, bottom-out flow configuration.
-
Quick-opening ring-lid and a 1/2-inch top vent valve for convenient daily filter bag replacement and system air venting.
-
Inlet and outlet connections adopt quick-connect fittings, ensuring excellent sealing, easy assembly/disassembly, and significantly improved production switchover efficiency.
-
Implementation Results
After the bag filter system was put into operation, the customer’s production line performance improved notably:
-
Enhanced Product Quality
The 50-micron PP filter bags consistently intercepted suspended impurities in the juice. Concentrate turbidity was stably maintained within process specifications, and product clarity and sensory quality were recognized by downstream customers. -
Improved Maintenance Efficiency
The quick-opening ring structure allowed a single operator to complete filter bag replacement within 15 minutes, without requiring special tools. This completely transformed the previous maintenance model, which required multi-person collaboration and took nearly one hour. -
Increased Production Continuity
The top vent valve effectively released air trapped in the filtration chamber, ensuring smooth filtrate flow and avoiding flow fluctuations caused by air resistance. The production process became more stable and controllable. -
Extended Equipment Lifespan
The 304 stainless steel material combined with sandblasted surface treatment effectively resisted citric acid corrosion. Even after prolonged operation, the equipment maintained excellent appearance and performance, with maintenance costs lower than anticipated.
Customer Feedback
The client’s production manager stated that this stainless steel bag filter system resolved the long-standing filtration efficiency issue that had troubled them. It not only enabled product quality to meet export standards but also gave them the capability to undertake more OEM orders from international brand customers. The equipment is compact, easy to install, and simple to operate, making it particularly suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises requiring rapid production start-up.
