Background

A North American manufacturer of industrial protective coatings and automotive paint finishes experienced repeated appearance of fine black spots on their white paint in early 2024. After analysis, it was found to be 5-80 micron ferromagnetic particles and carbon powder impurities, which led to excessive coating particle content.

Challenge

The original ordinary basket-type filter can only intercept particles larger than 150 micrometers and is powerless against iron powder at the micron level. Impurities come from wear during raw material transportation, equipment wear, and pipe corrosion. The quality fails to meet the standards, posing a risk of losing major customers.

Solution

In June 2024, the customer introduced a custom stainless steel magnetic rod basket filter, integrating 5 10,000 gauss neodymium iron boron permanent magnets (for adsorbing ferromagnetic particles) and a 200-mesh stainless steel filter basket (for intercepting non-magnetic impurities). The cylinder body is made of 316L stainless steel and features a quick-release clamp design for easy maintenance. The equipment was installed after the grinding process and was configured in a parallel setup with two units to enable continuous machine shutdown for cleaning.

Effect

Impurity reduction: The number of ferromagnetic particles per kilogram has decreased from over 200 to less than 5, and the iron ion content has dropped from 85 ppm to 12 ppm.
Customer recovery and increment: Major customers resumed purchasing and their annual orders increased by 10%, with no complaints at all.
